The Kusini Impact

Our Mission is to Bring 5 Million Litres to 5 Million People in 5 Years

Water is Life

Globally over 1 Billion people lack access to a source of safe drinking water and sanitation and filtration systems are either too costly or difficult to maintain. We aim to change that.

Kusini Water is a social enterprise that builds water treatment systems from nanotechnology and macadamia nut shells. Our systems bring clean, safe drinking water to people in rural, peri-urban and informal settlements throughout the African continent.

How we're impacting lives around South Africa

our method

We partner with business and communities around South Africa to install and maintain Kusini water treatment sites. These sites create employment and provide clean, safe water to the schools and communities in the area. What makes our methods so impactful, is that they’re set up to last well into the future. This is made possible with you and your contributions!

how we measure social impact

Globally, the percentage of the population using safely managed drinking water services increased from 61 to 71 percent between 2000 and 2015; this remained unchanged in 2017. Additionally 19 per cent of the global population uses basic drinking water services. This means that 785 million people still lack basic drinking water services.

1 out of 3 schools in South Africa do not have access to safe drinking water and clean sanitation. This problem mainly affects kids aged 6 – 18 years who are most at risk of sickness from waterborne diseases and the danger of unsafe sanitation.

Target 1

By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all.

Indicator

Provide data of the percentage of the population using safely managed drinking water services from Kusini Water.

How we Measure it

We use an Internet Of Things device connected to every single one of our sites which show the amount of water flowing.

Target 2

By 2030 achieve access to adequate equitable sanitation and hygiene for all. End open defecation by paying special attention to the needs of women, girls and those in vulnerable situations.

Indicator

The percentage of the population using safely managed sanitation services, including a hand-washing facility with soap and water.

How we measure It

Include all handwashing facilities and installed ablution facilities into the internet of things platform. Continue to measure the amount of clean water flowing into all facilities. Work with health care workers in all our sites to monitor and record waterborne diseases.

Target 3

Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management.

Indicator

Segment of local administrative units with established operational policies and procedures for participation of local communities in water and sanitation management. We train and qualify local partners to operate water points, train the community on Water, sanitation and Hygiene best practices.
